The name Chelmsford dates back to Saxon times and the town is mentioned in 1086 as a pair of settlements next to the river Can.
In 1199 King John granted the town the right to hold a market and Chelmsford became the county town of Essex in 1250.
Chelmsford is famous for a great many things - most prominently it is the birthplace of radio and was the first town to be fully lit by electric street lamps.
Situated in the heart of the town centre is the historic 15th Century Cathedral which is the home of the annual Cathedral festival.
